I hope you'll all take a peek at at least one of these. Get some reading done now while it's summer and you have time!
The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver- This book is considered a "modern American classic." If you don't get around to it this summer, chances are it will be assigned reading at some point during high school. This story follows the life of Taylor, a girl born into poverty and raised by a single mother in the south. As she gets older, she realizes she wants more for her life than the small-town quiet she's grown accustomed to, so she buys a car and moves a few states away. There she meets Lou Ann, a struggling young mother, and together they learn what it truly means to be an adult, a woman, a mother, and a friend.
The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan- This is a great book to read for our lesson on perspectives. It's is a collection of poems and short literature pieces by fictitious high school students, all of whom are struggling to define their identities and understand love and their blossoming relationships. Each voice is distinct, and the way all the separate stories overlap and interweave into one brilliant composite story really speaks to the power of voices.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold- This novel, which was made into an equally brilliant movie a few years ago, is the story of a young girl named Susie who taken from her family at a very young age. The story floats in and out from past to present, and even with its haunting themes, still manages to be beautifully, lyrically written. This is a really good novel to read if you're someone interested in prose poetry
Carrie by Stephen King- This is King's debut novel. It details the life of an outcast teenage girl living under her abusive mother's rule. As her anger toward the world that does not accept her, her oppression by her mother, and her humiliation by her classmates continues, Carrie's fury drives her to unimaginable power. This is a great read for anyone who likes horror or psychological thrillers.
