Theresa's Reading/Watching Recommendations

This list is in progress:

Elements of Style Strunk and White. This book is helpful for all kinds of writing. It was written by a curmugeonly professor at Cornell University, and it probably one of the few grammar books that will amuse you.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. I recommend reading this book buffet-style, rather than straight-through, as it can get a little repetative. It's a useful book with tips for writers, and has a casual, conversational tone.
"Why I Write" by George Orwell. An interesting personal essay on writing and politics from a great writer.
The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell. I bet you could find this one on Youtube.

The Bloody Jack series by LA Meyer-- a thoroughly enjoyable series with a tomboy heroine. Well-written historical fiction for young adults.

Roald Dahl, Tales of the Unexpected and More Tales of the Unexpected. Short stories of suspense and creepiness.

Michael Herr, The Dispatches. A great piece nonfiction book about the Vietnam War. Look at the way he evokes a sense of place-- amazing.

1984 by George Orwell. Terrifying and brilliant. He creates a world and mood so successfully, that for several days after you finish reading it, you will walk around thinking Big Brother is watching you.

"Why I Write" by George Orwell. I also recommend his other essays.

"Here is New York" by EB White. Great essay on place.
